Scaffold tube comes in aluminium as well as steel.--A three foot length will do just fine.---Personally I have a 6 legged wheel brace and. I use an 18 inch length of ally tube on a pair of the legs.--Never fails.

I purchased a couple of extra breaker bars early this year, and both have performed well.

This one below was used on a crankshaft bolt and worked a treat
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271987317621

1

used on conjunction with a metal tube
2

Bought a smaller one at the same time just incase i ever needed one.

Now, getting personal are you a big, strong bloke or a bit of a whip? I'm the latter being 5' 6" and 11 stone.

The reason I ask is that I find a longer bar far easier to get decent leverage.

I've got a Sealey 750mm bar (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/353594200098?epid=10017004966&hash=item5253db5022: g:cTEAAOSw10dhdwjG). The downside is that you can find it's too long to get a decent amount of movement particularly if you're using 6 point sockets.

Mine has a "soft grip" handle which, in hindsight, I wouldn't bother with because if you get something stupidly tight you can't slide a scaffold tube over it for even more leverage.

Hope that helps.
Evening Andy,
Thanks for your thoughts.
I really need to sort out what size of drive would be best for my socket set(s).

"Now, getting personal are you a big, strong bloke or a bit of a whip? I'm the latter being 5' 6" and 11 stone."

That made me laugh....I think its more down to age "69"....use it or lose it.....and I think I've lost it....or almost lost it.

As regards size 5' 8" and a bit and a bit (one of my brothers was in his words 5' 8" and a bit and I was slightly bigger than him, hence a bit and a bit!) and about 12 1/2 stone.

Anyway getting back to breaker bars, thanks for your help.
Regards David

Thanks Ronnie.
You know I've got form.....I couldn't possibly accept your offer in case I lost it....and I'm still looking for the case!
I'll have a look at what Halfords have to offer.
Thanks. David

[QUOTE=bigblue75;2905444]A decent quality extending wheel brace is a handy thing for a roadside wheel change (in a way that a mains powered rattle gun isn't). When having work done by mechanics / tyre fitters it's worth ensuring they don't tighten the wheel bolts with anything other than a torque wrench.[/QUOT

Hello Joe,
Thanks for your thoughts.
When it comes to the roadside I think that is a job for the AA etc. now.

For rare use, it is ok but a bit heavy and no electric brake. Also the sockets did not fit well in the case but apparently there was a change in specification and that was the reson but machine mart made good

Thanks Ian.

Hi David,

Recently I've released and undone some pretty tight fastenings: 150 Nm for the awkward front suspension lower arm bush housings, 350 Nm for the front hub nut and whatever the crankshaft pulley bolt is. In all cases 1/2" drive hand tools worked perfectly well. For high torque values it's more important to use a good quality hexagon socket (rather then bi-hex).

You probably already know this but the wire brush treatment followed by a light smear of suitable lubricant on the threads ensures that the tightest of nuts and bolts can be released by hand and without drama after years and years.

Plus of course, as said earlier, on your return home from tyre fitters always check the wheel bolts with your torque wrench.

Simon

Default Breaker Bar

Afternoon,
Solved the problem...can't beat a rusty old piece of hollow steel pipe.
However, I have ordered a breaker bar but I'll keep the rusty old steel pipe just in case.
Thanks for all your help.
Regards David
