Default Autobox lost gears

I can see that this subject has been covered, but haven't found exact symptoms in my searches-
Car is cdt 2002 with Jatco auto-92000miles.
I changed the fluid around two years ago.
Has always worked perfectly for the last 3 years.
Overtook a lorry yesterday ,and seemed to lose power, but realised it was the box slipping.
Soon lost all gears.
Turned engine off ,restarted and had all gears for 1/2 mile.
Lost all gears again and repeated on/off etc'.had gears for a few hundred yards, then same again.
Could this be a 'level' issue,or a reverse piston?
I've had no noises or jerkyness-it's just happened in a short space of time.
Any comments would be useful, thank you
Ken.

First thing to do is check the gearbox oil level.

Came across the same symptoms once back in the day on a 6 cylinder Austin Princess. Turned out to be the internal filter blocking as the box was breaking up.

Whipped the filter out and threw it away and everything was fine for the next few races, which was all I wanted.

Thanks for that,,I've just checked the level at the correct temperature and it was fine,,even ran a bit of new fluid through ,just to make sure.
So I'll have a look at the reverse piston.
I still get forward gears for a short time ,but no reverse.

Heard of this before, a local guy over here scrapped his 75 for the same reason, had forward gears for short runs but no reverse .
Ge took it to an auto shop but was quoted srupid money to sort it out.
Could the bands are slipping.

I had this a few months ago, unfortunately in my case the gearbox was very very broken.

Just changed the fluid, quite dark and a bit smelly,so wonder if it's the reverse piston and clutch plates,as mentioned in another thread.
I'll have to look further...

Does it “over Rev” whilst changing as if it’s a slipping clutch, because these boxes are like motorbikes that have “wet clutches” if so it’s a box change

It did initially, but then lost gears, stuck in garage now with some forward movement but no reverse, so can't really move it again.Going to have a look tomorrow.

There are two things I didn't expect to see written together. "Austin Princess" and "Races"
Banger racing I assume/hope

Yes Dave it was a banger - the wedge shaped 18-22 Series though, not an older Westy, which were the cars to race if you could get hold of one - solid as a rock.

The worrying thing about Ken's gearbox symptoms is that they sound similar to mine and due to fluid starvation.
