Default Coolant woes

Hi all have had the head gasket replaced on my zt 1.8 turbo and it's still losing coolant . What is puzzling me is that every time I check the coolant level it drops as soon as the cap is removed . Can anyone help me please as I don't know what the problem is thanks

Hi, leaks can be anywhere, not just the HG. Inlet manifold gasket, water pump, stat, pipes etc. Did you bleed the system properly after refilling coolant?

Also, don't overfill the header tank, only needs to be level with the bottom of the fins as you look inside 😎

In my 9 years ownership of a 1.8t tourer i have had 2 leaks - one leak was the IMG and the other was loose coolant hose to the turbo - both leaks were identified by putting her up on a ramp in my local garage and running her until the leak was evident with the under tray off -the IMG leak took an hour to manifest itself. I also swopped out the MGR rubber hose for silicone hose, put a metal t piece in and change the coolant cap every 18 months - 5 years no problems.

Also put in Hans gauge which gives peace of mind as it gives the coolant running temp as a real time display. - they were on E bay but no longer.

You can get the correct temperature by using the obd, I'll dig out the link Here you go, 19/7 are the numbers https://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/for...ad.php?t=55585

That sounds odd - I would check the usual areas (inlet manifold gasket, thermostat seals, waterpump etc).
Was it done by an MG Rover specialist? Most non-specialist garages fall into the 'MLS trap' - they mistakenly assume the newer MLS gasket is a universal upgrade, which it isn't if liners are low.
When fitted to an engine with low liners, coolant loss will occur due to the gasket not sealing.

You say you are ‘losing coolant’. Where are you filling the header tank to? If you are filling it to the top, it will pump out the excess water when it gets warm, because the water level should be nearly at the bottom of the neck of the header tank. There is a mark ‘Max’ in the bottom of the header tank saying so. Fill to this mark and no higher..
