Time to stop breaking 75s ?

Hi all,

Perhaps a bit of a controversial topic and I fully understand that some cars simply reach the end of their life but this is just a thought.

Recently I've saw quite a few nice examples of 75s being broken for parts including 3 cowley cars all high spec V6 one that seemed to be launch a car on a V reg with blue personal line interior 2 of them under 100k miles and seemed like really nice cars I can appreciate some may need some work but it does seem like a massive waste considering 75s are more and more becoming appreciating classics.

I'm wondering is it perhaps time to try getting some of the get cars like these off breakers before they all disappear?

Because of the high value of scrap metal at the moment some of the breakers in Norfolk and Suffolk are crushing most of their stock.
In one case seven 75s and ZTs in one day.
I think the days of buying a Cowley or PPD car needing work for a few hundred pounds will soon come to an end. Maybe when a rare car becomes available we should be buying it and standing it up on sorn until the time is right to get it sorted out. That's what I plan to do anyway!

Yes I agree or perhaps some campaign for people to offer the cars to the club first before sending them off to breakers

Well it looks like I got lucky, my 2000 (built 02/12/1999) W reg 75 1.8 Classic SE cost me just £800... A few niggles to sort, but only 71200 miles at purchase. Out of interest had a look on eBay, couldn't find one for less than £1000 & most were £1500+ with more miles and dubious history.

I bought my first X reg 2.5 connoisseur for £400 at 84k miles with the only issue being an abs light on it was very nice car but it met a very unfortunate end.

Most are £1500+ now but I just saw a T reg 2.5 V6 connoisseur SE with supposedly a bad head gasket for £500

They won't all disappear - I have 4 x 75s and 2 x ZTs. They are hopefully going to last me out!

The problem is if it a part exchange at a dealer they often dont want to take the chance on any warranty problems so they might as well scrap it, they have probably allowed for that in the price they gave for it. A friend in the motor trade wont sell anything over 12 years old what ever condition it is in as he reckons it will always come back an bite him. He once sold an Escort that had done 35k from new and was 15 years old, he was fitting a new engine in it 2 weeks later.



If a car is owned by someone who does not do there own work a failed MOT or if it has a major fault can see it heading towards scrap.



I recently noticed a very nice Rover 400 on the back of a car transporter owned by a local scrappy. I asked the driver that it seemed to good to scrap and he just said ''knaddged head gasket''.

There are loads of 75's being broken on the various 75 pages that appear on Facebook. Their sole purpose seem to be to intimidate enthusiasts. They boast of immaculate cars with full MOT's in desirable colours such a recent white example that the seller refused to sell and showed pictures of the car broken up and paint sprayed onto every panel as it was loaded onto a truck for disposal.

They make me sick
