I can now answer two of the questions I was asked yesterday.

1. Dave, you must be psychic! The "bonnet open" light does not work at all, whether the engine is running or not. I assume this is not a coincidence, but I hardly dare ask what the connection is.

2. Pab, yes, there is a ticking sound from the fuse-box when the horn buttons are pressed. Unfortunately, that's the only sound.

Both Pab and i had the same idea and the answers you have given confirm that there is a connector not making contact below the off side headlight. It can be reached by removing the small panel next to the undertray just in front of the front drivers side wheel

I'm sure Dave will give you the diagnosis, I know it too.

Thanks, chaps. Sorry to seem thick, but is that the panel inside the wheel-arch that I remove to change the headlamp bulb?

Not quite as simple as that on this occasion Charles..

Under the car on the drivers side you will see a flexible quarter panel which is retained by three cross head screws on the outer edge, remove these.

Shine a torch up next to the screen wash reservoir, you are looking for a grey connection block. Once you have found the said item, make sure it is connected and not become detached.

Thanks, Pab. I'm working tomorrow and on Friday but I'll give it a go on Saturday and report back.

Not much further forward, I'm afraid. I have found and removed the panel and looked up inside. The only connector I can see is a whitish plastic one, quite high up under the headlamp, with black, yellow and blue wires coming from it. It seems to be firmly connected. Is that the one? I can't see any other, and there don't appear to be any loose wires.

I have checked the fuse and it seems to be fine.

Still no further forward with this one, and nothing in the Haynes manual (I consulted that before posting on here). It's a minor problem in the grand scheme of things, but the car won't pass its MoT without a functioning horn. Any more thoughts, anyone?

Hi Charles, the problem is proved from the reports you gave from the questions pab and I asked The operation of the relay proves the horn buttons are working, the fact the bonnet open does not work shows that the two faults have one thing in common, and that is that the circuit to the horn and the bonnet open switch is not connecting usually from the connector on the loom, I can only surmise you cannot see the correct connection or the wire is chaffed somewhere. It sounds like A BUMPER OFF JOB TO DOUBLE CHECK
