Default I am going to have to be an idiot

Due to various reasons
I have to leave the North east on Wednesday travel to Gosport
Thursday travel into London then return to Gosport
Friday travel to Peterborough and travel back home Monday

A round trip of close to 850 miles -
The original plan was to use a hire car but as less than a 3rd of this trip and the least mileage is down to work the 45ppm I will get simply wont cover anywhere near the costs of a hire car - and our bank account is already squealing from buying the car..

So with the wife also away in the reasonably priced car- and lets be fair the LR Series IIA is not an option, I got to use the ZT

Only owned the car just over a week
I have no chance of getting the cam belts /service done , getting it T4'd before I need to leave, even if I had an offer to get it in, I don't have the time to get it anywhere

So today I did the checks I need to do before being an idiot

Checked My AA full membership including relay and hire car is still valid ( luckily I get it free via work)
Checked my accident cover is still in force ( same again free through work)
Checked the ZTs oil, water, tyre pressures

It goes against everything I know is right, taking an unknown car without doing the basics on a trip like this is stupid, but sometimes we simply don't have a choice- a week Tuesday I will either be announcing it passed the task - or offering bits of a ZT 190 to members

It'll be fine bud, just enjoy the exhaust note........you wouldn't find that in a hire car

I hope it will be, its just everything I say to people never do in a unknown second hand car- just goes against the grain a bit

Where are you getting your car hire quotes from??
I just hired a VW polo for 4 days (I pick it up tuesday) for £145, and that includes the extra insurance to reduce the excess to zero.
I know a polo might not be the ideal vehicle to travel nearly 900 miles in, I think the next step up (an Astra) was about £40 more.

I have to use Enterprise - a weeks hire for a car carrying 5 folks reasonably ( the days at Peterborough are work days and I am the designated driver for us all) comes out at 241 + 200 pound deposit + fuel + £11 per day excess insurance which we have to take out on any car we hire on company business, OK I get the deposit back as long as I don't crash.. I only need the car for 3 days for work stuff, the other 3 days are personal ( a funeral) so down to me... with the personal days/ mileage I have to do which understandably the company doesn't cover its too big a hit on our bank account.
So your looking at £500 + fuel outlay - with about £150 coming back from my company mileage + the deposit- guess £130 for fuel being nice

I even looked at a smaller car for the 3 days I need then upgrade but that goes down as a one way hire for both cars and only makes it more expensive

I recently hired an Astra/Megane from Enterprise. Cost was £28.xx per day. I took 3-day accident waiver insurance from an independent company costing £9.99 for 3 days. The insurance cover was more comprehensive than the one provided by Enterprise as it reduecd the excess to zero. I was given a Megane 1.5dci which proved a really nice car to drive and returned 63MPG sitting at the speed limit on the M62/M6/A14.

Although I did pay an extra £28 for one-way hire.

Do you have business use insurance on you Rover? If not you could be in an awkward spot if you have a prang.

You'll be fine. We made it to POL and back from Perth with a dodgy clutch just avoided hills and high revs....

Good luck to you!

Oh don't remind me! Alison had leaky clutch hydraulics for some time until I could get to a specialist- A2 Cars Limited- in Milton Keynes.

Hope you get yours sorted soon Anna!
