Default Fuel tank, water and stupidity. Not a good mixture.

I accidently put 5lt of water in my tank in the 75 Don't ask. Not surprisingly the car stumbled to a stop 1/2 mile up the road. Anyway the garage done the required work, drained the tank, filled with some fuel, Forte fuel cleaner etc and got me on the road again.

I've since filled the tank with fuel (full tank) and been using the car without any problems but on the fourth day after being on the road again later im getting an intermittent misfire and loss of power, EML flashing then, not flashing, then going off. Could this still be put down to the water or should this have burned off through the fuel by now?

Think I would be inclined to change the fuel filter just in case .....

Fourth ask... you may still have some water in the tank. Just traces but enough to cause the occasional stutter... good luck getting it sorted!

Water added to the tank falls to the bottom as a separate layer under the fuel. Draining the tank will not completely remove it, so there may well be residual globules being shuffled about at the bottom as the fuel swashes around. Finely dispersed water droplets may coalesce if they accumulate, but some will find their way into the pump. I can't see the filter stopping the flow of finely dispersed water. Some will get to the engine, which is going to suffer the the hiccups for some time I suspect. You could certainly replace the element of the in-tank filter, but I suspect it will still need time to fully disappear.

The 5 litre containers I have in the garage are actually labelled in large letters 'Coolant' and 'Deionised Water'. I find it helps. But petrol storage is a no-go for me anyway.

Cant you lift the rear seat and remove the fuel in tank pump and siphon out all the fuel from the very bottom and then leave it open for a few days to let the water evaporate?
