In 12 years with my CDT tourer auto I never bettered 48 mpg brim to brim. Every single litre in 12 years was logged and calculated.

You did well to get that with a slush box - manual CDTs are far more frugal.

Well, just topped up ready for the start of this weeks journey.
only needed 22.67 L to top up again, according to display I had done 287.7 miles at a consumption of 57.6 mpg. My calculation of current odometer reading minus previous odometer reading gave me 288 miles, at a consumption of 57.75 mpg happy enough with that for economy, also please that my readout is pretty close to my calculation. Ill check it again at the next fill, see if the trip computer accuracy continues and confirm the economy. |

Guys guys, anything over the figures in this guide are surely wishful thinking. If Rover could quote anything above these figures...surely they would. So, why guess at it? These figures were probably obtained with the spare wheel removed, wipers off and all the doors taped up too!

It greatly depends on driving style and therefore what conditions those MPG figres you quoted were obtained in. I suspect they're combined figures, i.e. not in ideal driving conditions so the subject of this tread and others on the same subject is really: "How economical is the car in as close to ideal conditions as possible?" or "How many miles can I get from a tankful if I manage to satisfy the requirements of driving safely, courteously and at the optimum speed for economy?" As an aside, I've just returned from a week's holiday in Scotland and have been noting how much fuel the car has been burning. The tankful that got us home from Inverness today, in varied conditions (long spells at 70 mph, plenty of 30 limits through villages and also some stop-start from congestion) was burnt at an indicated average of 50.4mpg, which will work out at about an actual 48mpg - the figure published in the Parkers link you supplied!! I am absolutely sure that at a steady 40mph in 5th gear with no use of the brakes the car is doing well over 60 mpg, but how often is that possible or desireable? |

Ha ha, gotta love a MPG thread, only bettered by the validity of an undertray.

Too true - mind you I wonder if I get better fuel mileage without an undertray?

This subject comes up every few months and always seems to go over the same ground, usually with people talking at cross purposes.
People come up with good figures (like 56+mpg as above) they've had on a good run and other people 'point out' that they're not possible and refer to the official figures. Both are correct because they're usually talking about different things. It certainly IS possible to get 56mpg or higher in a manual diesel 75 on a good individual run, when it's summer, mostly motorway/dual carriageway, and with normal, restrained driving. But over a longer period, with mixture of weather, driving conditions and roads the average will usually be between the official figures. It's just coming up to 5yrs with my 75 and I've recorded every fuel purchase and every 'trip' mpg in that time and the overall average is 46.4mpg and that's 70% town driving. But when I do my regular trips to N Wales (twice in the last couple of weeks, including one to Jules at Colwyn) with all but 10miles of a 200m round trip on motorway and about 40% at 70mph, its always 56+mpg. |

Well, Awfully sorry parkers, but my wishful thinking 75 has beaten your figures yet again. I topped up with 42.76 ltrs on Sunday, having covered 532 miles since my previous fill. According to my calculations this equates to 56.5 mpg. My journeys were predominantly motorway miles doing 60 -70 mph, except where the persistent roadworks limit us to 50 mph on the M6 and M1. My display however was showing 58.8 mpg so the accuracy of this is not as good as last time. I'll be filling up again tomorrow ready for next weeks travels, so I can check again against parkers figures. |
