brake judder

Not serious and not noticeable under normal braking, but slowing down quickly from around 60-70mph there is a noticeable judder. What can it be?

I have got the same problem & concluded that it is due to surface rust building up as the car is parked outside & not used enough to keep them clean. I went out yesterday to a quiet road and did a bit of hard braking from speed, this has cleaned the discs and reduced the problem considerably. I have got some new discs and pads but I am not going to replace them yet as there is a lot of pad wear left

The vented dics rust from the inside outwards. If you check the discs carefully, you can sometimes see pinpricks of rust where the vented sections are. The pitting causes uneven braking and in extreme circumstances the discs can warp or fail around the inner circumference near the hub!

A micrometer will tell you if the discs are unevenly worn. (If you ask it politely!

Discs rust more where the pads are if left standing for a week or 2. The rest of the disc only gets fine surface rust, as it dries out more quickly. If the car is left outside, you need to rotate the wheels regularly, otherwise the pad-covered part of the disc gets pitted. Alternatively, if you get any oil or grease on the disc, the clean part grabs, it will heat up more, and expand more than the greasy part of the disc with localised heat, emphasising the grabbing. If your discs are fairly new, you could get them skimmed on a lathe if rusty.

I recently fitted new Mintex front discs and pads but within a week I was getting brake judder. They were cheap - just relied on The Name.
