Yes, they would cost more, but price isn't the issue here. We need them to be a much closer copy of the original part.

Obviously, there are companies out there who are willing to make this stuff, they just need a bit more guidence.

I personally wouldn't care where the parts were manufacturered as long as they were of good quality.

But that 's just it quality is more than not often determined by exactly where parts are manufactured, how would you convince someone that a Pentax camera produced in Albania is as good as one produced in Japan, would you buy a Rolex made in Turkey or one made in Switzerland? ( personally I wouldn't buy a Rolex but you get the picture!).
We associate certain parts of the world with quality, and others with the opposite.

We are very lucky that MGR collapsed while our cars were still in full production. The factory pipelines and dealerships were stocked with parts, many of which are still available today. We are also lucky that Caterpillar has kept X-Part going and producing parts for our cars.
I agree that the day will come when X-Part will be uneconomical to run and parts availability will be in a lot worse situation. Some small suppliers will take up the slack and hopefully outfits like Dayco, Delphi and Tazu will find it worthwhile to produce critical parts. As mentioned before it will likely be the electronics that finally put paid to our cars, but who knows? Maybe an electronics supplier will come up with a plug and play solution to replace ECUs and other electronic gizmos that keep cars (Not just ours!) running. One day we may be able to plug an I-phone into the dash and it will have an app to run the car. Or we will all end up driving electric appliances.
Regardless, if MGR was still around they wouldn't be too keen on keeping our 15yo plus cars running. That would be bad for new car sales.

Those days are gone i'm afraid. German cars are no longer made in Germany etc.

My Wife's Japanese Suzuki was built in Poland. Your Pentax probably will have been made in Albania lol

The other day i was driving past Padgetts motorcycle shop in Batley. Brand new Kawasaki's been delivered in crates that said "MADE IN CHINA" on the side

I have posted this before, but if you haven't seen it, it could be an eye opener.

Our cars are easier to get parts for than similar aged cars with fully running manufacturers. I had an 8 yr old Ford and was often told of NLA spares. And Vauxhalls! I was also once told by Skoda I had a 3 week wait for a DMF for a 2 year old!

This club and its gurus and the likes of XPart , Rimmers DMGRS do an excellent job. Yes some parts are under par - but we are still getting parts. I personally think we do well and our cars will be quickly recognized as classics at a younger age than some due to the enthusiasm about them.

I work with a lad in his 20s. He doesnt talk much. And when he does its usually kind of dark - as in he's always down in the dumps. He shocked me the other day when he started talking about cars and out of the blue said "I really like your blue MG...its a really nice car" - see its not just older peeps that are starting to see them as special!

Just to add

Hoya closed the Pentax-owned factory in Tokyo, and moved most of their operations to Southeast Asia. All professional (DA*) and consumer (DA, D-FA) lenses are produced in Vietnam, whereas DSLR cameras are produced in Philippines.

Now back onto MG / Rovers

I agree, and I must say your MG is my favourite shape and in the best colour.

Think I need to find one in good nick while they are still cheap.

I drive past one like yours on a regular basis and I keep thinking I may call at the house and say. "if it's ever for sale, this is my phone number"

What these cars are going through is purely the natural progression of any "future classic" car. I have been involved with the Scimitar (Reliant and Middlebridge) for 40 years plus and have seen these worries many times before.

Numbers WILL dwindle ( many people with no thought of the longevity of the marque, at the moment buy them as they are cheap, run them into the ground on a shoestring before scrapping them when a big bill looms eg: cam belts on V6.) Eventually those left are the real enthusiasts for the marque and they will find ways to keep the marque going.

The Scimitar club often will find members who want a certain part and when enough are on board will commission a limited number to be produced for those people. This is usually a GB company and the quality is usually excellent. At present they hold a stock of windscreens front and rear for the entire GT, GTE range which were commissioned by the club enthusiasts which are better than the originals with the front being heated......something that was not done originally.

Compared to many marques, the Rover75 / MGZT range is still extremely well supplied for parts and one just has to be careful when buying especially if always looking for the cheapest option off internet auction sites.

Two of the biggest suppliers of Scimitar parts actually started by buying / acquiring doomed cars and stripping them of all usable parts and then selling them to other members so you never know someone may go down this road! Both of them now have huge businesses but have obviously have had to branch into other motoring areas although they still carry the largest stock of Scimitar parts and are always looking to recondition and re manufacture limited number of certain obsolete parts when needed.

So try not to worry this is natural progression and I am certain there are and will be many enthusiasts who will care enough about the marque to overcome any of these problems.

NLA parts are the way that ALL manufacturers get you to buy new products. Western nations are obsessed with selling and buying of "new" designs and "upgraded" versions. Very few things can be "fixed". Vehicle recycling centres are stacked with cars that have very little wrong with them. My family tell me that I am an extinct dinosaur! I no longer seek to be rich, or be surrounded by "stuff", I just want to be happy.
