Qualifying flight-based holidays will be under the ATOL umbrella and ABTA will cover those which are not flight-based.

What about the hotels?
But what about the foreign hotels who will get absolutely nowt? I bet they never got paid for months after the season was finished in normal times. Another nail in the Great British Experience.

What seems to be on the rise, are tailored travel agents, eg Travel Counsellors. I have used them in the past, and they would offer the best of both worlds. I think the way they work is a compromise to doing it purely yourself and a high street travel agent.

I think that is a real shame that Britain's oldest Travel Agent has gone to the wall.
They have been going since the mid 1800s and have provided a service for countless people, including myself, with travel memories. Like the op says, maybe it is because we do business differently now. Or maybe it is due to greedy incompetence (that sounds familiar!). No doubt it will come out in the wash. I have said for over a decade now, that retail jobs will not involve selling, but rather become virtual messengers, passing orders to warehouse staff passing to delivery drivers. With possibly showrooms and shop windows. The high street has already started to revert to domestic accommodation in some places. With this, the competition and survival of a company will become speed of delivery. Which is another rod for an etailer's back. Just look at how many white vans are on the road, and even the likes of Hermes trying to get the jump on more traditional courier companies, with private individuals earning 50 pence per package delivered in their personal vehicles. As far as it coming out in the wash, I fear this is a pointless and ultimately expensive waste of time money and effort, as nothing is resolved except confirming the blame. By which time, the directors will have 'served their time' of being banned from holding such a post, and be back at it again. Or if they got out in time, be 'completely blameless', and be the head of another company. Again I speak from experience, the former head of Jessops, slid in as a trouble shooter along with his team, a number of whom were involved in bringing DSG to its knees. Jump ship with a package and then over to HMV. Remember what happened there? I am stopping before I go further into a rant

It's not just UK workers that are affected. Overseas hotels and resorts, even countries, depend on the tourist trade for a large part of their economies. Spain and Greece et al are already seeing hundreds of thousands of cancellations for the rest of this year together with next year.
It has a devastating effect on local economies where not only TC owned hotels are concerned but most of the other hotels as well. Meanwhile in todays news it is reported that Peter Frankauser, CEO, has made £8.3 million as part of his package that included £2.9 million four years ago. An amount of £47 million has been taken by board members and investigations are being made by The Insolvency Service. I wonder how far that will get and if any investigation of insider trading will happen.
