Default Alloy wheels

I shall shortly need to replace all four tyres on my car. This makes it the ideal time to consider what, if anything, to do about the wheels.

The car is equipped with alloys which are now 8 years old. They seem to be in good condition apart from some discolouration but I have been advised that they may soon become porous. The questions are:
  1. Is there anything I can have done to the wheels to prevent this?
  2. If not, would members advise buying new wheels?
  3. If new wheels are required, what are the options? I have no particular preference for alloys and would be happy to have old-fashioned steel wheels provided they have decent trim.
Members' views would be greatly appreciated.

I have read that there is no special handling advantage to be had from alloy over steel. They weigh a similar amount, so really it is a cosmetic thing - alloys look nicer.

I have never heard of alloy wheels going porous - I have had them suffer corrosion along the point where the tyre bead seats, so that it caused a slow puncture. That is easily fixed by cleaning and painting the inner rims. I have heard of manufacturing faults cause alloys to be porous.

If you are generally happy with the rims, get a quote for refurbing them.

if the wheels run straight no flat spots on the inner rim and they hold air pressure then they are fully serviceable.

tyre choice is a factor for handling and road noise.

if you like the style of wheel,as mentioned above have them refurbed if your budget will allow.
