If anyone near York has a T4 and would be willing to help, it would be much appreciated!

EWS looks like the unit on the left here http://www.direct-keys.co.uk/BMW.htm
5 point security bit required for removal.
If Russ can't help, let me know, and I'll have a run down.

Latest update: tried the car again this morning with both keys. The key I normally use still doesn't work but it started first time with the spare key (even though it wouldn't work yesterday). Seems like the problem is with the chip in the key I normally use. Can anyone advise on what to do with this, please?

Many thanks to all who have tried to help with this problem, especially to those who kindly offered to come over to look at it.

There sounds like a synchronisation problem between the transponder in your key & the ews immobiliser, I would personally have a run over to see BigRuss, as there may be an underlying problem with the EWS unit, however it's not the huge (£500) problem it used to be, as virgin units can now be programmed to your car via T4.
Not a problem if caught early enough to be able to read the contents of the failing unit.

If you look at the link I already posted, it's a thread about the exact same problem, resolved by getting a new key coded up...

Default Engine disabled, replacement key covers

Hi

I replaced the plastic key covers today. The doors would unlock & lock remotely, but the engine would not turn. The dash messaged, "Engine Disabled". I replaced the new backs, with the old Valeo backs, which contain small magnets/chips and the car fired up immediately with both.

I hope that this is of assistance.
