Never owned the MG version, but had a succession of the 2.0 GTi automatics in the 80's and 90's - the Company sold them cheap at under 3 years old and I was friends with the Transport Manager, so always had first choice. Should have kept the last one!

Looks A1 condition, but not wishing to be critical, if I was in the market for this at that age and mileage, (even though very low for age) and their deserved reputation to dissolve in just about every conceivable place at the mere sight of daylight, I'd want a very detailed and knowledgeable inspection and take any sellers description with a dose of salt at that price.

Some years ago, watched a consumer programme about dodgy cars and they took a death trap car from a scrapyard and gave to a back street garage, within days they had transformed it into what passed as a very tidy and well looked after car.

They then showed you the hidden bodges and it was still a death trap, just a good looking one, they then crushed it to make sure it never returned to the road.

The Montego and Maestro range did/do rust fairly readily, but always in the same places: bottom of front wings, sill ends, rear arch bottoms and the corners of doors. The later cars (post 1986) rusted worse than the earlier ones and out of the whole range, the red/brown ones seemed to last better, perhaps due to the paints used. I had a 1988 white Maestro which seemed to have very little rust-proofing at all!

That one looks a little over-prepared (or more accurately the colour-balance in the pictures makes the colour 'pop' a bit too much) but tidy enough, certainly the interior would support the mileage. That's one of the tidiest MG interiors I've seen for a long time - and apparently the dash isn't cracked which is a miracle if it's been parked outside.

It's a mystery, however, why the seller has gone for an advert in block caps with a grey background. Not exactly easy reading...

£8k for a Montego! Or a V8 75 hmmm let me think.

Shame it's not the turbo version as I watched this the other day...

Funny how many of the cars I've liked during my life have been ridiculed through theirs then become ''collectables''
