Air con whirring woes!

Hi - hope someone can offer advice. My ZT air con has started making a whirring / whining noise that rises and falls with engine revs and can be heard quite loud at low speeds- obviously less audible once moving quicker. Thinking may need new compressor? How easy are they to fit if it is this? Cheers

Not really - more a higher pitched whining I think - depends on the size of the whale I suppose!

Thanks for the reply - I'll have a look. I was just sure I'd read something before about the compressor making a similar type of noise prior to needing replacing..?

Hi Typhoon, yes, mine does this and has since I picked the car up about 20k miles ago. It sounds a bit like a transmission bearing is on its way out but thankfully goes away when you turn the climate control off.

I've put it down to a very cracked and perished belt which as yet I've not been able to replace as it looks like a hell of a job!

It may be the compressor or maybe tensioner but the AC still works fine.

Let me know how you get on and if you find out for sure what causes the noise :-)

Around £50 should get you a air con service which I believe vacs the system down, and then refills with the correct gas pressure and lubrication. If you air con hasn't been serviced for a while, this may reduce the noise or cure it altogether.

That can't hurt but in my car's case I only noticed the problem after I got it re-gassed and serviced so that it would start working again.

Of course, they may have made a bad job of it

Like you say, could be the compressor has already suffered too much use without the correct contents in the system.

Unlikely I think, as I've recently had all my belts changed and my car still makes that noise when the ATC is on auto.
