help with bush removal.

Hi guys, I have to remove the rose balljoint/bush (similar pictured below) from my rear hub (the one on the upper arm) as I believe that I may have damaged it last year bashing it into the hub with a heavy hammer. I bought a BMW bush removal kit hoping it would have the correct sized cup but all are too big, more suited to remove larger bushes such a front of trailing arm bush etc. Can anyone suggest the correct cup to use as I can use the threaded bar and other parts from my existing kit. I bought a large socket thinking that would work but its too thick for the new bush to fit in. thanks for reading.

Just done mine for my suspension refurb. An engineering firm pressed them out for me. They said it took their 20t to get them out. Hopefully not so bad for others but I think a press is the order of the day

Jonc does that mean you had to remove the hub to get it under a 20T press? I still haven't replaced the one to go with my new upper arm, as I didn't have a long enough high tensile bolt. However, removing the rubbers, and putting 2 smaller sockets over the central bushing, putting the bolt through, and tightening it hard to squeeze the cups, got rid of the play, which was mainly vertical, greased and replaced rubbers. Just passed MoT! I'm thinking I'll ask the garage to do it when I'm not using the car for 1 week after Christmas, as I don't think it will be long before it loosens off!

I've just done one this evening, and it took less than 10 minutes.......admittedly the arm was off already, and the centre belted out.

So, if the bolt securing the upper arm is seized, chop through the bolt ends, then belt the centre of the bush out with a mash hammer.

Or simply use a selection of spanners like this



This should do the actual job, LINK I can't be bothered to trawl for the picture of the Vectra rose joint bush tool that I machined up a different cup to accommodate the deeper body of the R40 bush.



But this is the thing in question

My advice is to use a rotary wire brush to clean the part of the trailing arm that the bush is fitted, before attempting to draw it out.

Also make sure the thread of the tool is well greased before you start ;

P.P.S you don't need to remove the arm from the car, nor do you need to use a 20 ton press

Did pretty much the same when I replaced mine Bri - cut the bolt ends off as they were seized solid and then removed the rubber dust cover, made a small cut in the steel locking ring and removed the rose joint then used a puller to remove the housing.

Here is a couple of pics of rogues rear arm, I’m sure the bolt will be seized in the bush as it looks rather crusty. It’s now having a bath in plus gas until tomorrow morning.
