Soapy water to lubricate and I think the plumbers pliers worked in the end to squeeze them on . It was a bit of a pig though !

Red rubber grease is your best friend with the hanger rubbers, & some circlip pliers apply grease to the rubber & metal hangers on the car and exhaust.

Plumber's pliers - good idea, I hadn't thought of that. I'll give 'em a try when Rimmers deliver the bits. They're late - it was supposed to be next day delivery. £10.95 + vat = not good enough.

I've got a whole tin of red rubber grease - I'll slap it on. What are the circlip pliers for? (Surely they're not tough enough to enlarge the holes?)
