Exactly - George was chosen as our patron saint because of what he stood for. And England is/was not alone in recognising his high values.

He is the patron saint of many countries and organisations.

Considering his “multicultural” background I always have to have a laugh at the Far Right for using the Cross of St George as their banner !!!

Sometimes, just sometimes, it’s really funny to hear parroted dogma from uninformed origins determined to upset apple carts and unwittingly set light to a damp squib. It can only be the result of a massive history knowledge deficit. Or a purposeful decision to be contrary.

For instance, I have a Scottish grandmother who married a Welshman who absolutely refused to speak English to anybody other than her, and who was more Welsh than Wales. Nor did he speak Celtic/Gaelic (traditional/ Scottish/Islands). My maternal grandmother, four generations of Liverpool (Sefton Park) married an East Anglian farmer (so probably en route from Boadicea and a Viking Norseman following something of a scuffle somewhere in Lincolnshire). That makes all that followed possibly either Picts or Romans (or even nowadays Germans) and I retain my father’s Welsh surname and was born in England.

As posted earlier, mine was the only red and white flag in the avenue but it was not necessarily about England. I leave the issue of nationalism to those who think it important and I fly the flag to commemorate a sainted knight who was a martyr and died for his beliefs and true standing.

Not for him the wriggling contortions to find favour with revisionists and non-entities, but to challenge unjust oppression and subjugation brought about by the ascension of former friends. Now, where have I heard that before.
