Very well done David, just picked up this post which shows just how busy the forum is.

Makes me wonder if that was all I needed when I replaced the alternator on the diesel a few years back.

I had the whole front end off the car but did a couple of other preventative maintenance items at the same time and replaced the auxiliary belt.

A few weeks after the new alternator was fitted the car started giving problems with battery going flat. I replaced it but still it was going flat as alternator just could not keep up with all that was running.

I even started a time line documenting everything as I was sure I was going to have trouble getting the suppliers to change the alternator again, but oddly enough things just corrected themselves and the car has never given trouble since well up to last week with the fuel pump saga.

Doing this now and finding the guide very valuable indeed. It's saved the skin on my knuckles and a fair few pennies!
I did not quite understand how to get the brushes out, and the new ones in and found this excellent video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVvPzwtxdrM
which just goes over the generic brush-changing-soldering-replacing bit.

Thanks, Daniel

Excellent how to, thanks David

I found the removal of the rubber~ mastic sealant over the the two 7mm nut headed brass screws the hardest part , it's essential this is removed completely or you will not get the 7 mm socket to sit on them square.

And as okenora has pointed out the new regulator comes with a cap shaped sleeve that retains the brushes so that you are able to slip the whole assembly back over the studs, and the slip ring.

Obvious to some ,but not all.

So, for those that don't tackle D.I.Y. jobs often, and as this new assembly looks awfully like the one just removed, after you've got your new regulators 7 mm screws and the two 8mm nuts back on and tightened, remember to pull this retaining collar off so that the brushes make contact with the slip ring !!! then, slide on the new supplied cap, and continue with re assembly.

If you don't, it will not generate power, as the brushes,( retained in the temporary assembly cap ) will not be making contact with the slip ring, and you will have to do all the work again up to the point of removing the black plastic casing, to see the regulator again to remove it.

Snagger.
