Now both women have had the fines cancelled. There are no rules on how far you can travel to do exercise, and they were observing social distancing whilst doing so, They have received an apology from Derby-shire Police.

They only drove 7 miles and there are no rules on how far you can travel to do exercise. Both women have had the fines cancelled and received apologies from the police.

Should never have been fined in the first place..Utter nonsense on the part of the Police. Ask your self a question, How many arrests did they make when the BLM were running riot?

When Boris goes seven miles to ride his bike at the Olympic Park can't fine them for going five miles.

on the news 2 cars with people travelled from Coventry to Durdle Door (175 miles?), they have been fined and so there is it seems a limit to how far you can travel or is it just interpretation? Again, grey

'how big your world is' - exactly. Seems that some people's worlds don't extend past their nearest post office. I've no problem with that. Mine extends somewhat further.

Enforcing authorities e.g. police are based generally on county lines rather than LAs

And still do not have any legal standing for acting as county border controllers.

I like that you said minimum. Anyway - where is there any legislation telling me which supermarket I must patronise? Nowhere.

I'm glad to hear it. The police ought to rein themselves in and stick to law enforcement. not guideline enforcement.

All this constant talk of 'rules' is misleading. There are laws, and their are guidelines. While the latter may help inform application of the former they in themselves aren't enforceable by police: or mandatory for anyone. While I'd hope that people will continue to act bearing the guidelines in mind, I have no expectation of everyone rigidly adhering to them as 'rules'. That would be ridiculous and just plain hasn't happened once since this whole thing began.

P.S. On the subject of the original post, unless the neighbour's carry on is a nuisance that can't be ignored : ignore it. If it can't be ignored then look into ways of making anonymous non-specific reports - don't make them too detailed and don't, whatever you do, give any indication to your neighbour that it might be you making reports or that you have any interest in their activities at all.

I suspect that the reason a particular distance was not mentioned in the guidelines is that the government ran up against the same issues as we've been debating, how long is a piece of string.
However what they are trying to achieve is to limit leisure mobility in an effort to reduce transmission where suitable areas for exercise are closer at hand. This is not necessary activity, like going to work, collecting prescriptions, getting food, attending a hospital etc. There is no restriction on them, although in the spirit of the times you should limit mileage if possible.
Maybe there should be a mandatory limit of 5 miles, say, and if you're questioned by the police it's up to the officer whether to accept your justification or not. If you feel a fine wasn't warranted then an appeal would be available.
That would probably be acceptable to most people, but there will always be those who won't agree. Johnson and his 7 miles being one of them. Actually to the edge of the park it's nearer 6 miles to No 10.
