Ronnie suggested an IMG (inlet manifold gasket) leak. With that you'll only get a misfire on initial start up. Coolant dribbles into the manifold when the engine is cold then burns off as the engine heats. You get steam from the exhaust on start up then the misfire clears.
Thanks Steve I'll get in touch with Mat, DMGRS.

David, if you can't get in touch with Brian, I can pop up and put my code reader or P-Scan on it to have a look
Or, I have a scanner that I no longer use, yours if you want it?

Thanks Ronnie. If I can't get to the bottom of it I will definitely take you up on your offer but I could fancy a ride down to Seaton Carew for some fish and chips. Regards David

I use an inexpensive OBD tool -Creader 319 - it identifies error codes and does clear them. Obviously not as good as a professional scanner or some of the more expensive OBD tools which can diagnose ABS for example.

What an excellent offer from the king of car bling of a scanner !

Been in MB country you also wont get a better recommendation than Brian
Just invest in plenty of Hob nobs

I am sure with the above help you will soon get your car sorted ,

I have had various Autel code scanners and all have worked with the Rover, but I would take Ronnie up on his offer as will know the capabilities of the scanner and suitability for your car
Anything more serious Brian has a T4

There is no issue with code readers only, to find the fault codes. But if you can't erase the stored code it means next time you can have extra fault codes throwing in a red herring, so advantageous to delete stored codes every time

IMG problems will be accompanied by slow coolant loss ,usually the engine miss fire's from start up for a few seconds before clearing
Plugs , coil packs and leads usually miss fire under load (acceleration)
A spark plug colour chart will give you a good idea of engine condition and performance .

What are your thoughts?
Update on 1.8 Non Turbo Rover 75/1.8 Non Turbo MGTF misfire problem.
I bought an "Auto Fault Code Reader, KW808 EOBD OBDII OBD2 Car Engine Check Diagnostic Fault Code Scanner Standard 16-Pin with Backlit LCD Screen" and was able to obtain the following fault code "P0303 Generic Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected"
Would I be correct in thinking that the misfire is more than likely a plug or a HT lead because if a coil was faulty there would be a misfire on more than one cylinder?
Thanks for you help.
Regards David

Cylinder 3 has the coil pack fitted so you can discount the HT Lead
I would remove the coil pack and check the HT to Plug connection for corrosion then check and gap the plug . One simple way to check if it's the coil pack or the plug is to swap your coil packs over to see if you move the miss fire to cylinder 1
Obviously there is an outside chance that a miss fire can be caused mechanically, but most likely electrical.
I had a similar one before Christmas with cylinder 1 and through elimination found it was the coil pack even though cylinder 4 wasn't affected
Luckily I had a spare coil pack

Do as Tourer Steve suggests - if not the coil pack and the misfire is persistent to one cylinder you may have low compression and need to do a cylinder compression test. But i would always concentrate on the coil packs first.
