My reference thermostat is set at 21.0 C and will remain so. The house is super insulated so I can do that.

Greening. Whatever one feels about the unimaginable cost of Greening, I'm sure some way could be found to mitigate those costs in favour of the supply of energy. We are after all sitting on oceans of coal and gas and other sources.

After 25+ years of living in a 500+ year old house, we find 18 degrees comfortable and 20-22 a luxury only to be enjoyed occasionally e.g. at Christmas with the wood burner going.

During winter, with the office at 21-22 degrees, my colleagues used to be sitting there in the fleeces whereas I sit/sat there in my short sleeve shirts in the middle of winter.

In general, I think most households could reduce their inside temperatures by a couple of degrees.
Currently in our little snug with a reading of 22c. I’d be happy at 18c myself, but the other half likes to keep turning up the thermostat. I did suggest she might take over the heating bill, but that didn’t fly for some reason! Just a couple of degrees cooler makes a good saving on heating. What the UK really needs is mandatory good insulation on all new builds. I think the ‘mu’ values in older houses are fairly poor, hence layered clothing or a snug are essential unless one has money to burn.

My son is renting in Surrey in a new build completed about 6 months ago. He says the background temperature in his room is 18c with just his PC running and can go as high as 21/22c with the heat pump. So, I agree, the UK should be investing in good insulation for all new builds and properties capable to accommodation additional insulation.

That's impressive. Let's hope it doesn't need the cladding replacing in a couple of years! as an aside, interesting that when a thatched cottage roof burns the place down, no-one calls for all thatched roofs to be replaced?

That's probably because most thatched cottages are privately owned, so have their own insurance cover.

It's actually a house as opposed to flats and there is no cladding. It's a custom build for letting, built to a very high standard. The designer kitchen is unbeliveable.

Do most thatched cottage owners donate to the governing party and have lobyists at Westminster? I am not suggesting anything, just thinking aloud for a moment.

And there lies the problem and part of the solution. Most buildings in the UK are poorly insulated, and old, so what ever heating is used is significantly wasted. We also lack fuel storage capacity, e.g gas, and our nuclear reactors are old and nearing decomissioning dates, we don't build our own but contract foreign firms to build new ones, no idea why.

In addition, we lack organisation, and leave everything until it is too late, or a national emergency, the government cares little for ordinary people's wellbeing, choosing instead to bury head in sand.
Result is cold people.
