Water in foot well

Went to my car this morning and found a little bit of water in passage front foot well. Did rain hard last night so thought it could be plenum chamber but had the drains clean in the summer so I checked anyway and the chamber was dry. Has anyone got any ideas on where this could be coming from please. My 75 has NO sunroof as iv read though the forms and sunroof drains can be a problem. Any info would be much appreciated thank you

Hi Darren.
It could be a couple of things; the plenums have had water in them, and it's got past pollen filter, not just now but in the past, it all builds up and only shows when the sponge on the carpet can no longer hold any more water.

Maybe the scuttle clips are leaking.

Leaking in the rear boot and it flows under the rear seat and down into the rear footwell then onto the front footwell.

Also check where the wiring conduit passes through into the car under the rear seat these can get corroded and leak water into the car.

it's a case of looking under the carpet front and rear and the places above.

The source of water leaks can be one of the most pain in the butt problems to solve, as Artic has mentioned some of the most popular ones.


Sometimes it requires a bit of stripping down of panels, carpet and trim removing etc to expose the metal and working backwards from where it appears to the source.


Hopefully you don't have to go that far but a little tip if you do.


Dry the area, then lightly sprinkle some talcum powder around where it appears, the foot-well and up the bulkhead and other vertical surfaces etc and if any water runs down these surfaces it will leave a track pointing to the general entry point area for further investigation.


My son as an ultrasonic ' sniffer ' to check for such as water, air, refrigerant leaks in cars and wind noise etc, if you are really struggling in finding the leak but know the approx, area and know a friendly body shop it may be worth asking them how much it would be to ultrasonically check it

I think the problem is solved now. I removed the plastic underneath the windscreen and put silicone sealer round all the little plastic bungs that the clips go in to that hold the plastic underneath the screen.

I'd suggest lifting the sides of the carpet and checking for water, as Arctic said the foam under the carpet will hold more water than you imagine before showing on the surface. There are impact sensors under the carpet that will rot, as will the floor of the car if left wet.

If you have a wet-vac you'll be surprized how much water you can get out.--
