Thank you for the somewhat primitive suggestion!

Hello Hadjigeorgagis,

I'm afraid that's not quite true. We paid the same tax (VAT, I'm not aware of any others) when we belonged to the EU as part of the purchase price. Now it is excluded and is chargeable by the UK rather than the supplying EU country. So nothing's changed there.

Regarding import duty and associated fees, these too have always been levied on goods from "external markets" such as the United States and China and the principle was established long before the EEC was even born. You're correct though to say that it's an increased cost for the consumer. I wonder if it's waived on the manufacturing contracts EU countries have with China where virtually everything now originates. Or is it just hidden from view? Now there's a question!

Simon

Thank you for educating me in VAT law, I am well aware that taxes were paid locally, before our independence from Europe (ie Brexit), what I am not aware of and still not told is the level of taxation in general levied on goods purchased within the EU, at the time of making a purchase, only to find out that the delivery courier will only deliver after you have paid some obscene amount of UK tax, levied by the current government.
May be that is what YOU voted for!, I certainly did not.

Do we lack a decent manufacturing industry because we the public wanted cheaper products that we could get from abroad, did companies move abroad because they could save on manufacturing costs, did we buy foreign because British made stuff was such poor quality, other reasons for buying foreign are probably many.

Look round the world at some of the costs people pay in other countries. Buying a pizza in Norway is enough to make your eyes water.

I meant well in my original post, and yes I do blame the current government for the mess this country is in, in everyway possible way, they are supposed to be in charge are they not?, I certainly couldn't care less what people in other countries have to pay in tax, but I do in the UK, we all pay enough taxes period.
It is people not questioning anything that has led us to this state the country is in, and the politicians are laughing at us.

It's my understanding that it's about 20%, the principle being that all member states are equal.
The "obscene amount of UK tax" you refer to is also 20% so you're no worse off in terms of purchase tax.

All the best,

Simon

We need clarification by the appropriate government department in the UK, as to the taxation that is levied on items purchased from around the European Union, now that we are no longer a member state, where is this explained, I am not aware of any such information, if anyone knows please point it out so we are all more informed.

PS Who is Hadjigeorgagis, not me!! ( well I know who he was, he was the dragoman of Cyprus, responsible for tax collection on behalf of the Sultan, during the Ottoman occupation of the island)

Thank you for clarifying, 20% VAT is still obscene, in my eyes.

That is it with this post, I said my piece.

This discussion should be somewhere else.
Not necessarily car related, certainly not 75 or ZT and it's political.
