Default family homes and their gardens

to me a 3 or more bedroom home I a family home. A home with or will have young children. I guess it is about money/profit but some have gardens the size of postage stamp. No way a child could ride a bike or play football in it.

somewhere in the region of 60ft long and 24ish feet wide should be a legl minimum size for a new build.

Its all about how many houses they can squeeze into the available land. Last house was a newer one, tiny gardens front and back.

With today's land prices Ian, that would double the price of a 3-bedroom house in some parts of the country.

I think the answer lies in ensuring that all new estates have adequate paying areas and parks as communal facilities.

getting to these areas for young children may not be safe and at times inappropriate, if family or going out shortly for example.

we should not have to legislate for decent size gardens but I feel that perhaps we need to.

I know this is about gardens but we are the only country in Europe (i believe) that doesn't have minimum sizes for new build houses.

Holland have one and has a similar if not higher density so it's achievable if the will is there.

What about folk who want\need a new build family sized house, but don't want\need a large garden? If a minimum garden size was mandated they would have to pay a premium for something they neither want nor need.

valid point but I suspect most new build family size homes are owned by people that will have children although I do have friends that bought a new build 4 bed house but don't have children. 60ft X 24ft is not big.

We’re looking at moving in about 3 years, to another new build, 5 bed detached house. While I want a garden a bit bigger than we’ve got now, I wouldn’t want 1 60ft long! Too much wasted space. As long as we can have a shed for the mower and bikes, a decent seating area, and a bit of grass to drive the model tanks on that’s fine. Which tbh we could do in our current garden if it wasn’t on such a steep slope.

I'm assuming no young children. I had two and both played outside and 60ft was not enough for a game of football.
A garden at something like 30ft with another house and garden behind the next house is only 60ft away, fat too close for me but I don't like new build estates.

Where I was before was a fairly new build, tiny gardens, pokey rooms, looked out of the window straight at someone else's house. When I moved to what had been my parent's place it was like a breath of fresh air, one of four cottages surrounded by open grass and woodland. I look out of the window and I'm looking across the Firth Of Forth across to Fife.
