Default 4 horses dead

4 horses have been killed by vehicles in the New Forest. Apparently the horses were licking the salt that had been put on the road. The B3078 Roger Penny Way, another local road that I know.
No street lighting but good visibility.
Not sure if one incident or as many as 4.

I have to wonder what speed the vehicle's were traveling at but the limit is 30 and 40 mph, manly 40

For goodness sakes, take care, it should not come as a shock to anyone driving in the New Forest that there are horses, cows, pigs or dear on the road!

That reminds me of an incident many years ago when driving through the Ashridge Estate in Herts. It was dark and a deer jumped over the hedge bordering the road on our nearside, about 20 yds in front. It sort of skittered about in the road and then vaulted the opposite hedge and away. It happened so fast I had no time to react. Mrs SDA and our now adult kids still recall it.

Then again, around 1990 one of my reps wrote off his company Montego when he hit a deer on a road in Ashdown Forest, Sussex. He was one of the steadiest drivers I knew and was driving home from an evening class in Tunbridge Wells. He was very, very shaken up.

Driving anywhere in the country presents wildlife hazards, myself and two of my sons have had unexpected meetings with deer in Thetford Chase, fortunately non as serious as a friend of mine suffered some years ago when a red deer stag jumped a hedge and landed on the bonnet of his classic Alfa, the antlers came through the screen and pierced the passenger seat fortunately he was on his own at the time.
His address at the time was (wait for it) Roebuck Drive

A link to the incident

Seems all 4 horses killed at the one incident.

Deer move very quickly, horses don't in the New forest and if they were licking salt they may have been standing still or walking slowly.

It's a shame, I suggest the only permissible transport be downgraded to horse and cart in the area, or alternately not let your horses/pig/sheep/ferrets/rabbits roam freely.

My enduring memory of camping in the New Forest was an invasion of my tent by a couple of ferrule horses who ate half of my sleeping bag.

It's one of those quirky places you either love or loathe.......I much preferred my final destination on Hayling Island I have to say

People seem to have lost the art of driving around horses nowadays , once upon a time a driver would slow down to pass a horse ,now people just seem to charge ahead regardless ?

I wonder if the driver was a "local"

Judging by the state of the vehicle (Land Rover Discovery), it was a very high impact, with not much left of the vehicle front end. I know what my thoughts would suggest!

When I was traveling at about 50mph on a motorcycle a wood pigeon flew across my path at my head height. I couldn't avoid it my maneuvering the motorcycle but I just managed to get my chin down to my chest and it missed me by inches.
