Default Household heat pumps.

Get your £5K government grant & start saving for your heat pump before the governments gas boiler tax kicks in due to the 'Net Zero Carbon Emissions' policy. It will put around an extra £170/annum on the already expensive gas bill. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-58959045

"They" do not mentiion that the heat output of heat pumps is low grade (lower temp than a boiler). ie you need extra sized radiators to get the desired amount of heat into the room, preferably under floor heataing which runs at a lower temperature and probably larger pipes to move more water at the lower temperature....

would a larger heat pump produce hotter water?

My cousin had these in the USA. It was some time ago but I wasn't impressed. The heating was more like background heating and had to be supplemented when the weather was really cold. Having a bath emptied the hot water and it could take all day to replenish! It seemed like a lot of effort and expense at the time and it didn't really match up to the norm. Things may have improved a lot since then but that remains to be seen!

No. It is just like a small and large gas boiler which will produce more hot water but at the same temperature.

And of course as it gets colder, the airsource heat pump get less efficient and you may need heat backup from another source.

Ground source would be better BUT big deep hole required OR a large area for the pick up piping

Outdoor Temperature Capacity (Btu/hr) COPh
47°F (8.3°C) 51,000 3.86
35°F (1.7°C) 43,400 3.31
17°F (-8.3°C) 33,900 2.33

When I look at these installations and the pump unit itself all I see is components made by hydrocarbon and rare earth minerals how is that carbon free? Use of refrigerant too. Emperors new clothes me thinks.

I wouldn’t get your hopes up. There’s only funding for 90’000 households out of 20 million households.

I heard that too but how on earth did whom ever work out it would only help 90,000 homes?

Before we get too excited about the emissions associated with manufacturing heat pumps, please note the following:

'Homeowners will be encouraged to switch to a heat pump or other low-carbon technology when their current boiler needs replacing'

What they are saying is that it make sense to replace a gas boiler with a heat pump or another low-carbon technology when it is time to renew the former anyway.

In general, a lot of houses are not well insulated and at the same time people have become accustomed to higher than necessary temperatures. Addressing these two areas and then fitting a heat pump or similar at boiler replacement time may be a good way forward in reducing energy consumption and emissions.
