Quite suddenly my latest project MG ZT-T is running very roughly.
Yesterday I used this ZT-T quite a lot. I became aware of a progressive decline in performance. Acceleration was patchy and trying to use it produced long periods ( 3-5 seconds ) of misfiring which would clear and the car would accelerate quickly and smoothly with sudden very brief and sharp loss of power which I suspect was boost cut. Something of which I have not experienced with K-Series Petrol Turbos before.
It became so bad that I turned around and headed for home. The car still running roughly and even the "Check engine" light came on and off a few times. Also was prone to stall at slow speeds when coming to a stop. Obviously some things were not right. I decided to connect my T-300 Programmer which produced seven fault Codes, five "Historic" and two "current". More of this later. Right, removed the Ignition Coil Packs wanting to look at the condition of the Spark Plugs. As soon as I put the Plug Removal socket on the No.1 Cylinder Spark Plug I felt it was only finger tight. No need for a socket drive to remove. Also lots of hardened oil on the Spark Plug and at the bottom of its location. No.2 Plug was very tight ~ not from over tightening but from oil hardened holding all the threads needing extra effort with the Socket drive. It came out intact which was a relief. The Spark Plugs in cylinders 3 and 4 were also finger tight loose with oil at the bottom of their locations. Carefully removing No. 4 Plug there was a drop of liquid large enough to quench any spark. Inlet Manifold Gasket past its sell by date. So, that's another renewal. I cleaned the plugholes then fitted new Spark Plugs and refitted a couple of spare coil packs and turned the key. Immediate start. No hesitation or delay and engine smooth and soon settled to a reliable idle. These were the "Historic" codes:~ 1232; 0234; 1300; 1316 and 0300. The "Current" Codes :~ 1520 and 0302. My hard copy list of Generic DTC Definitions runs from P0001 to P0999. Code 0234 = "Engine Overboost Condition". I have a good Boost gauge so that's another area to check. Off now to check those fault code DTCs higher than 999... more new tricks learning for this old dog. Never too old to learn. |

Mis fire
I had something similar on my turbo tourer - turned out to be a failed rocker gasket - certainly was plenty of oil around the plugs and when the gasket was replaced she has run fine ever since.

Upon buying a used car i will service the car myself literally within the first few days.
usually the same day of purchase. I like to get to know what i have, i'll do filters/plugs/box oil/ PS fluid etc, all those things that are overlooked i'll change. Makes me feel comfortable about then going off and abusing it. I wont rev a car up and drive it quick until i've put my own oil/filters in at least, you dont know whats in there you cant trust what folk say anymore!

I have had two rear shock absorbers since May, Monroe, and decided to start fitting them today. Managed to get one done, will do the other one on Monday.Got two front discs Delphi, and pads to fit also, so looks like a busy week ahead.
