Looked into this the other day. Won't affect us, the tax rate is still capped at £305 for cars emitting more than 225g co2 but registered before April 2006.
I was worried because my two cars are 245g (Nissan) and 250g (75) but tax will be £305 for both this year

It amazes me they didn't take the opportunity to drive older, more polluting cars off the road by whacking up the VED on pre-2001 cars. Glad they didn't though.

In some ways this plays into the hands of those of us who like "nice" cars.

The general car buying public seem obsessed with mpg figures then tax (or duty or whatever "rebranding" HM Govt. put on it) and then insurance.

That means many really lovely cars are available for very little money.

If you don't do stellar mileages the difference between 25mpg and 50mpg is peanuts compared to the big issue....depreciation.

And don't get me started on the contract stuff.

Just my thoughts.

Each to their own with their own wishes and finances.

Andy.

Andrew, beware of repeating the nonsense spread by politicians whose only concern is tax revenue.

As far as petrol vehicles go, catalytic converters put an end to that as long ago as the early nineties. There are very few “older polluting cars” left now.

Diesels are another matter of course.

By the way, what about aircraft and everyone’s central heating boilers which are huge polluters? The politicians are very quiet about that. I wonder why?

They (the former) feel just as under the cosh from politicians as the motorist.

All this rubbish about filthy diesel gets up my back. I worked in diesel fumes for 47 years, and I am still here. What more can I say? You believe what you want.

ships are heavy polluters?
In fact cruise ships or some I understand, use cleaner fuel in port compared to out at sea

I am sure that they are Ian, compared to road vehicles with catalytic converters. But the important point is that shipping, like aircraft, is exempt from all the international proposals on tackling "pollution", and central heating boilers are never talked about. A bit of a one-sided argument wouldn't you say? Possibly linked to the ease of extracting tax revenue from motorists who accept the politicians' propaganda?

Always remember that for road vehicles pollution is lead, solid carbon particles, carbon monoxide, oxides of Nitrogen and hydrocarbons. The politicians try to persuade us that it's carbon dioxide, the gas upon which all life on earth depends, and the majority falls for it.
