The downside to that is larger particles of dirt will also pass by the filter.

They've been tested again and again (I'm sure you can find them on YT), and they confer absolutely no performance advantage.
Some people do seem to like the noise. Pretty sure they let a lot more grit through into your engine too...

On a whim I bought one some years ago for my CDT and had the garage install it as part of the service. On collection after the service the car had no performance at all, so bad that I went straight back to the garage after going around the block. At extra expense they replaced the air filter with a standard one and all was well again. K&N said they have not had any issues reported before, and I think I saw a happy CDT owner earlier in this thread. Potentially the garage messed something up and did not admit to it but its all a bit of a mystery. One day I will fit it myself and see what happens.....

It's been in there 2 years now. I whip it out at service time each year but so far it hasn't needed anything. Admittedly I don't do huge mileage.

Personally, I would stick with the standard one and replace it yearly.
K&N is supposed to be oiled, which is not a good idea with a MAF They give no increase in performance and don't actually filter as good

My old 1.8 NASP struggled to rev at all standard, I put in the K&N panel filter, 52mm throttle body, VVC inlet manifold and MG135 cams. none of them gave big improvements on their own but combined allowed the engine to rev freely and felt completely different.

However,.. If you are after more glorious induction noise AND proper filtration, I would fit a HONDA s2000 paper cone air filter , Like I have. Looks good, sound great and still filters the air going into the engine, unlike a K&N . And will never kill your MAF with oil either!

In terms of 'performance' filters and induction systems though I've never found any benefit to them really, in more modern cars as the induction systems are usually pretty well designed as it's an easy way to improve engine efficiency so any 'improvements' you make probably won't improve much if anything other than noise and looks. As long as you change the filter regularly it shouldn't be any problem or blockage in the system. It's a different story for old cars from pre about 1990 but that's an entirely different story as you are often talking about carbs rather than fuel injection. Dawn, leave it as it is. Nothing is gained in the long run , except a reduction in BHP. Showed on TV a few years ago they robbed BHP from your engine. It’s your choice.
