Seriously though, you're right, you cannot base an entire theory on a case study of one car, while simultaneously dismissing collective experience of many cars of similar type.

Goodness me, there’s no room for alternative opinions in some people’s world is there. It’s either accept what we say or be damned.

In my previous work role, I worked with a guy called Kevin. He was an absolute nightmare to work with and caused me no end of grief.

I have friends in other jobs who have worked with multitudes of people called Kevin - and they seem to have no problem.

My experience has taught me not to work with people called Kevin.

lol, that is quite ironic really, but answering it, it will depend if your opinion contradicts 'fake news'

I assume you are referring to yourself Simon

I am so looking forward to your explanation of the condition of the o rings fitted to a thermostat housing I removed from a MG ZR today

Brian; you have changed my quote using your own words whilst attributing it to me. I have reported you to the moderators. Your behaviour is not only childish but morally reprehensible.

Simon, why not have a little fun with it as revenge. I dont agree with it by the way, but what you have said is verifiable (click on the pink coloured arrow after the name in the quote ), and it's done now, so a bit of light hearted revenge?

Morally reprehensible? it was intended as a joke Simon, even you should be able to see the funny side, or perhaps not .........anyway prepare for another of my obviously alarmist, extreme photographs, not typical of anything you may have to say, but it does put a serious dent in your "Herbie clip" theory

Here we have a thermostat housing removed today from a 2004 MGZR which was scrapped following a rear end shunt.

The car had covered 89,000 miles at the time of it's demise.

I would ask that you compare the profile of the o ring fitted to an identical thermostat, secured in an identical fashion, for the purpose of a valid comparison.

I measured the outer diameter of the two o rings, in the case of the one in the upper picture it was 38.35mm and in the lower picture 38.99.

Not withstanding, it can be seen quite clearly that the o ring in the upper picture has flattened somewhat

So what we have here are two o rings which are the identical part to the ones fitted to the KV6 thermostat, the upper one is from a car filled from new with OAT antifreeze, and the lower one from my own car which has never had OAT in the cooling system.

The thing is, they should be in theory identical, as they've been installed and operated in almost identical environments, but they are not, so what are the differences in operating conditions? temperature? no, both thermostats were 88 celcius versions, method of which they are secured? no, both thermostats are bolted to the engine block with a single bolt which also secures the dipstick tube.

So that leaves us with another possibility, that the media the o ring has been in contact with for approximately the same period of time, if not mileage.

Well the o ring in the upper picture has been in contact with OAT for it's entire operating life, and the one in the lower picture has not.

I shall leave the readers if they've got this far to make up their minds as to which is the better preserved component, the one with 376,000 miles under it's belt, or the one with 278,000 miles less wear and tear

Brian
