Default has this ever happened to anyone before?

Come across a bit of a problem with the project tourer the other day, opened the tail gate and there was quite a loud bang which didn't sound good. Well this is what's happened, the ball joint for the strut has broken, looks like that has been rusting for some time So will have to look into finding someone who can weld this.

Has this happened to anyone else before?

Yes, it is a problem.
Not happened to mine, but, I have read about a number of people having this issue.

Edit: This thread might help.

I have seen a few of these!

Get to a scrappy Rick and cut a couple of sections out, have them welded in properly, itll look so much nicer than trying to repair the split.

Those tailgates are heavy! Surprised it hasn't affected more over the last few years. Good luck with the repair

Ouch, I've had the ball socket break but that looks awkward, good luck. I had to carry a wooden prop with me until I'd sorted it, as has been said, the tailgate is heavy.

Happened to me 5 years ago, seems very common and makes a horrible noise when it goes. My local garage fabricated some plates and have been fine since.
