Default Overheated! 🙁

Well, just when I thought my car was sorted.... I'm currently stuck on the side of the road with a shortage of coolant!
Hopefully I can limp home when water arrives... Good 10 miles away though and rush hour traffic to contend with. Not looking forward to this drive home...

Thanks Sheraton.

Had four expansion tank caps and 2 thermostats so far.

Coolant had come out of the cap again, and I'm sure I could hear a quiet gurgling/hissing noise around the thermostat area while I was topping up.

Took around 3.5 litres to top up...but at least the car's home. When rain stops I'll check in the V to look for leaked coolant.

Then work out how to fix this once and for all...I was only praising the car today when someone was offering me their V8 and asked me how mine was going - and I said it was great

Good move Darren. I'd also check that your radiator fan is working on low speed by using the 'demist test'.

Morning all.

Low speed fan doesn't work - never has since I've had the car. I noticed on the way home yesterday that the high speed fan kicked in after about 8-10 mins and that made me monitor the temp gauge.

No water in V that I could see when I checked last night, no water in header tank either. Too wet with all the rain to see if anything had dropped onto drive, although the under tray doesn't help there.

Will run it up to temp today and see if I can see any leaks and check pipes. Will follow some troubleshooting guides on here and see what I can find.

I'm prepared to replace everything if necessary. This is where I wish I was more of a mechanic!

Just need a car to get to work in now, till I can get the ZT booked in...

Ran the car up today, monitoring temps via phone.

Couldn't see any leaks from above, no staining in V, pipes pressurized but still squeezable.

After about 10 mins gauge was sat at 3/4 as normal. Water temp settled around 89 degrees idling revved the engine a little to 2500 for a short time then looked under car an can see water dripping every 4-5 seconds from driver side of the tray, so I do have a leak! Previous checks had turned up nothing, so at least there is something visible now.

Did notice that the passenger side air flow cooled off for a few minutes before I noticed the leak, driver side stayed constantly hot.

Time to book her in.

Also think i have the start of the death rattle in the manifold - noticed a rattling coming and going which I've not heard before

Darren,

I suggest that this is the cause of all your problems. No wonder your engine is overheating and losing coolant.

If you have a 3 speed fan, buy and fit a new set of motor brushes. If you have a 2 speed fan, replace the silver resistor with a gold type.

There really is no need for any further heartache.

Simon

This happened to me a short while ago. Suspected thermostat and booked it into garage, But it turned out to be the water pump, although no sign of coolant leak at home, there was a pool of coolant at the garage. It was pouring from the hole in the water pump bearing. when pump was removed there was no obvious sign of damage.
Changed water pump now ok.
