Keeping hi-line system - upgrading to digital cheaply?
Hi all,
I've given it quite a bit of thought and in the end, I'd like to keep the original alpine 4:3 head unit. I still have the original analogue TV tuner in the spare wheel well. Obviously TV doesn't work due to the digital signal upgrade years ago, so.. I'm wanting to get it working. I've come across this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/203109498951 Now if I've got this correct: I can get a 12v feed from either the cars battery itself or the ignition? As for connecting the video and audio plugs to the head unit, do I need an adapter lead that will take both the red and yellow plugs and convert it to the white plastic block with pins to connect to the head unit? Something like this? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audio-Vid...-127635-2958-0 If the above is correct, would this then give me TV or do I then need anything else like a Freeview box or anything? Thanks Rob Last edited by biffa75; 12th July 2021 at 06:45.. Reason: Added input lead adapter link to ebay |

Hi Rob, it's been a long time since I did mine but the unit you link to is similar to the one I used. Not sure if the lead for the BMW is the same but I suspect it is. I didn't buy a lead but made my own connections to the tuner in the boot which is just adding pins to the vacant slots in the tuner plug. (I have the pin outs somewhere if you decide to do your own lead) I remember the pins from some old computer leads were the same.
This then gives digital TV without having to buy anything else One thing to note is that the original tuner in the boot only supplies/has input for mono sound.

Hi Stocktake
Thanks for the reply. I'm glad I appear to be going in the right direction as I've never had a car with TV functionality before so I'm finding a little hard to get my head around. As for the cable, how would I go about making a cable up from scratch? I aren't too fussed if it's mono that's fine So does the tuner plug into the original anologue video module in the boot? Thanks Rob |

Hi Rob,
You just need to use any lead that has the connections on to connect to your Dtv unit (Standard rca?)and then some pins to fit into the tuner plug in the boot. Here are pin outs https://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/for...61&postcount=9

This is the option I did - a plug and play. May be a bit more expensive but a lot easier. See https://mgzt.info/2020/12/15/in-car-tv-working/

Hi line
I am very grateful for all the advice I have received from you all which has enabled me to keep the hi line going.
I would not change it for anything else.
