1998 2.5v6 starting problem
Hi. Unfortunately my car has become very slow to start, both whilst cold or hot. Once started it runs fine. I'm aware of the fuel filter separation issue, though my car has the earlier type filter fitted so can't be that. I'm suspecting the pump is knackered though is there anything else I should check? I don't have a diagnostic tool unfortunately. Thanks

The system needs a minimum 50psi fuel pressure to start, so if you suspect the pump it would be worth checking the delivery pressure at the fuel rail. This can be done using a mechanical (NOT electrical) tyre pressure gauge. There's a Schrader type valve on the short pipe on the RH end of the rear fuel rail. This is specifically for de-pressurising the rail, but can be used to measure the delivery pressure. You need an assistant to turn on the ignition (and so the pump, but not the starter) while you hold the gauge on the valve. There's at least one thread (HowTo ?) describing a screw-on dial gauge to do the same thing. Of course there are other issues that affect engine startup.

Do you mean that lengthy cranking is needed? When was the last engine service? What is the mileage covered? I very much doubt that your fuel pump is responsible for two reasons:
Don't touch the fuel filter! Check the battery voltage during cranking either using a multimeter or the instrument pack diagnostics. What is the reading? Alternatively charge your battery externally for 24 hours then try again. Simon

Is it just cranking and not starting? If so check the earth points near passengers firebox, could also be the camshaft sensor or even just the spark plugs
One thing I would do though as your car is over 20 years old is check the fuel filter although it was never a service item it will be in an awful state by now and it's easy to do If your still stuck bring it to me or contact Big Russ on here as he is not that far from you Dave |
