Default One for the wheel connoisseurs

Did the MK1 15 inch alloy have a cutout/slot where the wheel centre cap goes, just so the badges would all face the same way, providing of course the wheels were put on in the right place?

Were these the only wheels with a cutout/slot so the centre cap could only go
in one place?

My 16" Unions have a cut out so the badge will only fit in one place.

Maybe it was a bit of attention to detail that they all had but was not appreciated?

It's even more clever than that, the Rover emblem then points to the valve cap.

At least it certainly does on Crowns.

The really clever centre caps are on some late model Rolls Royces that can rotate in their holders so they are always the correct way up when you park.

Been playing with my 15 inchers today. Yes there is a slot that orientates the badge. It pushes out easily enough and fits again. Have a replacement for a space saver and had to take the badge out to get in on the hold down thread in the boot.

I think, not 100% sure, but isn’t it Rolls Royce wheel caps that stay in one position even when driving the car.? In other words, they do not go round when the car moves?

Correct, they are weighted so they always display the logo the correct way.

Is it just weight that keeps them still?

Think a Range Rover is big, the RR and Bentley "equivalent" make them look small.
You pull up with your brand new Kia to pony club, next person pulls up with their Land Rover, the next with their Range Rover and the last to arrive pulls up wit a Rolls Royce Cullinan, one upmanship at its best

I was unaware that RR have now designed their centre caps in this way, but then I’ve never been in a position to even consider buying one of their cars.

However, it’s made me think about whether it has any influence on the wheel balance.

If the caps rotate on needle rollers (it is RR, after all) and if they are then secured to the wheel itself, I feel that it probably does have some effect.

Should the caps however be mounted on a non-rotating part of the axle assembly, then (to my mind) logic says all will be well.

Would somebody with wheel balancing experience, perhaps elaborate please.

Regards

Mike

Can't see it making any difference to wheel balancing Mike as the caps aren't rotating so won't exert any out of balance forces.
