Question MG ZT Headlight Washers Question. MoT Fail if not working?

My latest ZT acquisition has MoT due in early December... few weeks away now. The headlamp washers do not work. They do on another ZT ( on SORN ) I have so before considering swapping parts, if not essential for MoT no need.

Maybe the problem is sludge blockage yet until investigate.

Another possibility, If I remove the jets from the front bumper and tape them off could that be a "fail". Any guidance here will be appreciated.

Really depends on the MOT tester John. By the letter of the manual, a factory fitted xenon headlamp set up should have the leveling action and washers checked.

From personal experience, mine have not worked for 3-4 years, not bothered to have them repaired. The car has not failed an MOT since I've owned it.

I've changed pumps on both my cars, as they appear to rot more then the windscreen washer one

The MOT manual says HID headlamps may be fitted with washers. Where washers are fitted, they must work correctly or the test will fail. Presumably, if you remove the washer jets, they aren't available to operate or to test. Don't know what the existence of the jet mounting holes in the bumper would mean. I guess this would invoke the tester's discretion. The MOT manual doesn't consider the removal of testable, but non-essential things like washers. As I read it, according to the manual, it would be OK.

depends on the tester really. have come across many people that have passed MOT's without the washers working.

The cause of them not working is usually the pump. The pump is loud so it's obvious when it works, much louder than the windscreen pump.

Try swapping the pump from your other sorn car, just peel back the driver's side wheel arch and unclip the bumper from the top and you can access the pump. Be a lot easier than removing the jets.

If you did remove the jets I can't see how they could fail it, be like failing it for having the tow cap missing off the bumper.

Other thing to check is the level in the washer bottle, the pump sits higher on the bottle so if the waters low it wont work.

Also, you probably are already aware of this, the headlamp wash only works on every 5th pull of the screenwash stalk and only works with the headlights on.

I have had 3 mot s since I got my car, and have been asked to run the washers. They didn't work prior to me buying the car, but the guy I bought it from said it had passed each time. In ni the mot is different though. I did repair before my first mot though. I replaced the bbus first,as it was faulty and thought it may have been the cause of the failure. They are linked apparently (£5 from a 3 series) and had to replace the pump. (£12 new from a 5 or 7 series) 20 minutes to replace both.

Have a similar problem, so ahead of my MOT next week I asked my tester. He asked what year the car was, I replied an 02 plate, and he said that is ok. The rule only applies to 04 and newer. I am not going to argue!
