Set up the recording thanks. Proper racing drivers when a car was a fuel tank on wheels!

My Dad was a Surrey Fire Officer back in the day and was tipped out to the crash that killed Mike Hawthorn.

When the Police radioed it in on the VHF they didn't mention his name, but referred to the deceased as a 'Person of Note'.

He is buried just down the road from where my folks live.

The meaning of the epitaph on the base of the gravestone may have changed a tad since it was engraved mind.

If I heard correctly, he didn't have much longer to live anyway - liver or was it kidney failure?

Perhaps it was a deliberate crash?

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

the first British grand prix I saw was the last one at Aintree.. my grand father was a real petrol head and took me. he also took me around railway engine sheds and once into the bowels of a ship on Liverpool docks. still not sure where I got my interest in anything mechanical, or why I work on the railway..

Then there was the smoke, the smogs, did I mention the smoke?

Everything is so very much cleaner now and so much of everything to be had - luxury.

Back then everyone struggled just to have the basics - yes, I can just about remember the post war rationing.

My interests eventually settled on hiking and camping. The English peaks on trips at the weekends, then one year we hiked the Black Forest. One of the best times of my life, with a great group of school friends, really nice types all of them. I had almost forgotten the faces and names, but several years ago one of them got in touch and sent me a group photo of everyone on the trip, stood in front of what would now be a vintage coach, just before we set off.

Another European school trip I did, with another group I only had two friends amongst all of them - not really so pleasant a bunch at all. Weirdo's and bully types all -most unpleasant. Not that I was ever bullied, my two mates were the biggest in the group and prefects both
