Default Suspected HGF

Hi folks,

I went to start my Rover 75 2.0 L V6 this morning as I do monthly since taking it off the road at the start of winter. It was running for around 10 minutes and then steam from the exhaust started to emit. I checked the coolant once it had cooled down and there was none. I do regular checks and could see none on the garage floor and all clips and hoses looked to be visually ok. I am a bit out of touch with what it costs to put right but I know it won’t be cheap. It’s such a great car that’s had an easy life and wanted for nothing it’s only done 69 thousand miles, just last year I had the cambelts and water pump done as well.

Ross

Its not often 2.0V6 engines suffer HGF, its more than likely the plastic thermostat or pipes at fault.

Was the car losing water before taking it off the road after having the cambelts and water pump done last year?

Can you check the top of the engine for water/coolant laying in the V, take of the black plastic engine cover (2x bolts) and peer down into the top of the engine, you may see water laying in the 'V' which will indicate a leaking thermostat.

Water pumps can leak slowly if not fitted correctly, sometimes its hard to see any water leaking if its minimal water being lost over a long period of time.

It's also worth checking the lower coolant pipe at the front of engine.

Thanks folks, I may add that there isn’t any mayo like substance on the cap that I could see either. One of the members, Duncan from CDL Autotec is going to have a look at it next week for me.

It’ll all be ok with Duncan on the case.

We have a 2.0v6 tourer in the family that has been boiled up several times due to insufficient coolant - temps of up to 120'c. Water loss was due to a poorly radiator & oil cooler.

We got all the symptoms of HGF, but once the cooling system was sorted out its running absolutely fine.

If your car has been cossetted I really doubt there's anything wrong with the head gasket.

Let’s hope so. I’ve done over 250 thousand miles in K-Series cars and not had it yet.
