Default They all do that!

It seems that there are lots of cars out there with "common faults" which are not widely known. I'll list some which I have recently come across:-
Vauxhall Insignia - seal goes on oil pickup pipe in sump. Low pressure light comes on and goes off occasionally. If not sorted, bottom end fails. Cheap part but expensive disassembly and reassembly!
TDV6 - Same problem as above! Jaguar land rover.

BMW E46- Breather pipe valve fails- engine uses oil- contaminates cat and sensors.
Variable vane turbos seize- various cars!
Automatic gearbox faults on Minis, Renaults, Peugeots, Citroens!

It's not just Rovers then!

Please feel free to add your own.

Don't forget head gaskets on Ecotec powered MK4 Astras.

And the latest Focus RS apparently.

I've had a few other cars - all of which have made my Rovers look cheap to run.
The only honourable mention goes to the Mazda 3 MPS - I've had 2, and both have been absolutely fine bar minor niggles. They're also blisteringly quick for a small 4 cylinder hatchback!

VW Phaeton - gear selector failure (£800)
VW Phaeton (another, because I don't learn) - gearbox failure (£900 2nd hand)
E46 BMW 330d - prop bearing failure, then the prop self-destructed after this... and finally a warped front hub that kept eating brake discs
E61 BMW 530d - I still own this, and 6 weeks in to ownership the ZT260 is my daily driver as the DPF have clogged solid in the BMW

Stick to MG Rover, it's cheaper (honestly!)

Not a failure as such. Incorrect gasket fitted at factory, all replaced under recall and warranty.

Any 13+ year old car in the same sector as the 75 is going to cost as much, if not more, to keep going.

I bought a lovely Volvo V70 on a 2002 registration. It was a daily hack, so wasn't too worried about the niggles, but if I'd wanted to have it at the condition my Rovers are in it would have needed:

New aircon condenser + gas
Rear droplinks
Rear shock absorbers
Suspension work at the front (bushes? It passed an MOT, but felt a little sloppy)
Gearbox flush / fluid / ECU reset (AW55 autobox, slightly clunky - well known and slightly fragile 'box)
Timing Belt Kit (had been done, but was almost due on time, if not mileage)
New driver's seat (stitching & heated seat inop)

We're looking at in excess of £1k of work for starters there. I'm glad I didn't get too involved as I only had the car for 9 months before it got written off while parked. I lost a lot of money on it, but would have lost more if I'd become too invested in it.

I run two spreadsheets concurrently. One is the spend on my Rover (purchase price + repairs (inc servicing)) and the other is the down payment & monthly payments + servicing on a lease car. I've chosen a Volvo V60 as the car in question as this is what I would have if I didn't have my Rovers. As it stands I'm at least 6 months worth of lease payments better off with the Rover at this moment in time. The only negative is time off the road for repairs and servicing (I tend to give it to my specialist for a couple of weeks to let him work as his leisure), but the car has never let me down and all maintenance and repairs has been completed at a scheduled time.

Some of the Mercs have those ABS pumps that are built to shut down after 200,000 operations, is it SBC?

Only £1200-£1700 to repair. My friend had one. Sacked it off after that.

Bought an E320 estate that now has a common fault with the autobox and needs about £700 thrown at it.

B5 and B5.5 Passats wings rusting from the inside out, approximately halfway between the door and wheel arch! A 'sponge' placed behind the wing to dampen vibration.............. vibration AND moisture absorbent material!
