Default 105 degrees to 107 fan starts

This is not good I know
So I'm intending on selling this car asap if I can
It's a shame cause it's soooo comfortable and in mint condition for 140 years old
Well except for where my herd of elephants have been through the back and side it's just dirty and full of rubbish where I sit .

The KV6 fan should first trip on at 100C or so. It seems like the low speed fan system has packed up. I'd expect a 2004 model to have the later 2-speed fan, so it's probably due to a failed slow speed resistor. Easy to check and easy to fix if that's why you mention it.

A 140 year old is worth preserving!

Default Continued use without slow speed fan?

My sheds not big enough to fit her in to preserve longer so am afraid will rust to death
If I continue to use possible outcomes continued driving rarely passes 107 degrees

What rating resistor is required and which wires do I put it on now that you mention it

Thanks

This is what you want if you have a 2 speed fan - however you want to check if the low speed has failed - do the demist test - switch demister on - go to front of car and look through grille at RHS - you will see if your fan is working or not. If it is not turning then replace the existing silver resistor with the gold one on the link below - its an improvement on the OEM resistor .

If you look in through the front grill, you may see a discoloured silver object, with a wire coming out at each end - that is the original resistor. The originals were never quite adequate, for the heat dissipation needed for the job, hence the burnt out. A higher wattage version is needed to be installed. These are usually gold coloured. From memory - the resistor needs to be 100w 0.47 Ohms - that is zero point four seven. A bit less than 1/2 of a Ohm. You can get such items from many sources, but best to ensure the source is a reliable one, you don't want to be doing the job twice. Farnell; CPC..

The bumper needs to be removed to install it and the wire connections need to be good ones, they carry a large current.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

Not sure what you mean by expensive for a resistor with easy fixing ??? However if your fan does not work on the demist setting then your low speed has failed and if it is a 2 speed fan it is invariably a resistor failure hence the need to swop out the silver one for the gold one.

Dan, before we jump to conclusions can you tell us whether you have a 2 or 3 speed fan. Which do you have, the first picture or the second?

Thanks Dan. In which case you should have a 2 speed system. With a failed resistor the fast speed should run at a coolant temperature of 112 degrees. However you have reported that the fan operates between 105 and 107 degrees.

Are you using the instrument pack diagnostics to determine coolant temperature?
Is your engine a V6?
Has any previous work been done on the fan system?

Simon
