The voice of experience?
Having read a thread on diesel alternator failures following an oil filter change, I was glad that I had taken the time to check out the PDF on this site prior to carrying out the first oil change after I bought a 75.
Over many years of motoring I've carried out all but a handful of repairs myself, armed with a decent toolkit and a workshop manual, so an oil & filter change would seem to be about as basic as it gets. Don't really know why I checked out the procedure before embarking on the task - probably because I hadn't really familiarised myself with the engine at that time - but I read the file and grabbed a large rag from the bag in the shed and soon realised it's value as I removed the filter element! But, at the time, I thought I had simply avoided an inconvenient mess............ AND HERE'S MY POINT ("at last!", you may groan!) there's a wealth of advice and information on our Club site and any job that's a "first" for you has been done by someone else who is happy to share his experience with you. If I hadn't wrapped a rag around the filter housing I might now be carrying my alternator into the local auto-electrical workshop! The cavalier attitude could have cost me a lot more than a simple oil change so, whether experienced or a novice....... if you've not done the job on a 75/ZT before, check it out here!
