Default Other hobbies, what floats your boat?

I’m always amazed at the similarities that we classic car enthusiasts share.

I’m new here but I bet I’m not alone in the following

My weakness’s
Old cars, obviously
Diesel locos,50’s onwards.
Robotics
Motorbike touring
Amateur radio (VZZ)

What’s your poison?

Time and space have seen me give up 2 hobbies the last few years.
Motorcycling, bikes now sold
Scalextric, over half of the collection now sold

I like old engineering
I like buying tools, the offer of a milling machine a few days ago has my mind wondering were to put it.
DIY
My Cars
I don't know about a hobby but days out.... this is what has left my wife and I, both retired, short of time. Hence lockdown in 2020 was great, time at home doing jobs.

Pipe organs. Fantastic instruments with some very clever old technology. Had the privilege of sitting at the console (keyboards) of the worlds largest fully functional organ in the world a couple of years back. 29000 pipes and a stack of 6 keyboards. Its in a department store in Philadelphia! However theres one in Atlantic City that has 33000 pipes and 7 keyboards and is half way to full working order. That is a true monster. Planning to see that little gem around 2025 when it should be back to 100%.

With you on the diesel locos, mainly because I drove many of them! Train driver from '84(?) til mid '90s before moving into management.

Motorbikes as well, my main transport for 20 years before marriage put me into 4 wheels.

Guitars, electric variety. I was always better working on them than playing them! Used to do guitar work, modifications, repairs, servicing. My "speciality" was taking an off the shelf Fender Stratocaster and turning it into a clone of the played by Ritchie Blackmore. That was only done to order, not a cheap undertaking, about £600 in upgraded parts not including the initial cost of the guitar. Biggest part of the upgrade was scalloping the neck, removing wood between the frets, very delicate job and the style of the scallop was very specific to Blackmore, one wrong move and the neck was scrap.

Blackmore scalloped neck.

Became good friends with John (Dawk) Stillwell, the guy who built Blackmore's guitars in the late '70, met up with him when he was in the UK a few years ago, he no longer with us unfortunately. Still do an occasional job for mates but I gave it up "professionally" when my health took a nose dive a few years ago.

Current main interest is our three mental mutts, 2 x Shih Tzu and a Pug Tzu (Shih Tzu pug cross).

I’ve always enjoyed DIY and tinkering with lockdown and all that’s been going on I’ve built a new garden type room for our rescue bunnies which I really enjoyed doing, so looking at garage/workshop and going to start making hutches, kennels etc.

Also enjoy walks at weekends with the grand daughters especially down the beach but can’t with the current restrictions 😡
