How did they load his laptop with porn?

Did he give them remote access?

My nephew made a similar claim when confronted with some less than savoury images on his iPad - so concerned was his mum, she called the PSNI.

Let's just say it didn't take a detective

They ask you to type in a URL that gives them remote access. I strung them along one-day to see what it was, just never pressed enter.
Once they have that one is guided to a screen with banking details for an online bank-for you refund of course. Plenty of info on Google about it.

They are very shrewd and confident, I said I would phone them back one day and they even gave me TT's real phone number and said they will await my call...

THIS is quite funny. Search for SYSKEY on youtube. Seemingly they use a legitimate piece of software called Teamviewer (normally used by company's IT support to make it easier for them to have remote access a company's computer, that is not connected to a network)

I am with TPS but it doesn't work with calls like this as they originate from outside the UK and cannot be stopped. When I joined they indicated that this was the position but it has stopped 99% of normal sales calls. If I do get one coming through I tell them that I am registered with TPS and they apologise and end the call if legit.

The scammers avoid blocking by operating abroad and not transmitting any identifying numbers. My phone 99% of the time comes up with an out of area message and on odd occasions when they are being very persistent and call back repeatedly in a day transmit a false UK number. This is to get over any block you may have put on to stop them. If you then check that number it will come up as not existing or unknown.

I can see your point but this was genuine followed instructions until details of bank requested. They knew all about the problems with his internet so they must have had insider info.

Possibly - but you must have seen mentalists at work, no? e.g. Derren Brown etc... Add to that calling hundreds of people a day, bound to get some right. The point being it takes less information to be supplied (maybe to a probing/leading question) than you might think, to have high success in predicting a lot more. This is how calls like this work, by being convincing. it's the art of phishing by social engineering.

Ive had these calls before.
I always try to keep them on the phone as long as possible, delay them with "my computer is just starting up", pretend not to understand what they are telling me to do etc.

While I'm messing them about they cant be scamming anybody else.
