Hello, I am experiencing a similar problem, but my question is a bit different.
the top adjuster on the shoes is supposed to be self adjusting. However, when I looked at youtube vids, there was a piece of metal that the cog 'clicks' on. I haven't seen this on our handbrake system. So, how do they self adjust exactly?
Thank you

As a long term user of the modified compensator, I need to change it on the new Connie I've just bought. Previously, it has been a somewhat torturous job accessing it from inside the car. Does anyone have the links to previous threads on here showing how it was done?

Most self adjusters have a link to the handbrake which has a "V" which slots into the serrations on the adjuster nut. As the handbrake linkage moves, it pushes the "V" against the serrations, adjusting the nut. These often wear away and the adjuster stops working. Have to say, I never noticed one on the last one I did, so they may not have one on the 75 as the brake is for the handbrake only.
No sign of one on the pics here:-

Thanks Mike. Looks like on ours the 'self' adjusting means 'adjust it yourself'

No, not self-adjusting - never has been on the 75/zt

Got it in one.--

As the shoes don't wear away in use after the first adjustment they should stay permanently adjusted.

The fix for a poor handbrake is too not use after market brake shoes. I tried two sets and couldn't get the brakes to grip. Jules advised only fit the genuine TRW shoes. The handbrake is now fantastic and holds without having to force the handbrake lever and it has a bit of 'spring' in it's action where before it just felt hard.

PS I've had the modified compensator for years and the handbrake hardly ever needs adjusting now.

You may have something there Pete, I could never fix the h/brake on my last car (75 Mk1) It always felt solid, no 'spring' as you call it. I was told it had Pagid shoes, a make I never rated. Always felt the friction material needed to be softer.

They do NOT self adjust, they do not really need to there is very little wear occurs to need adjustment. Auto-adjustment you will find on cars, is where the car uses drum brakes for the footbrake. The 75's drum and shoes are only used for the handbrake a disk is used by the footbrake.

The cog clicks against the spring which retracts the shoes, when the handbrake is released. There is a (too small) hole in the drum, through which you gain access to the adjuster.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.
