Thumbs up And the culprit is...

this kind of ring piece inside the barrel that was broken in 3 pieces but still maintained in place.
I've replaced all the pieces described above & put back in place the barrel: it works fine.
Only disappointment: I can't say thank you to @Unclefista who unfortunately looks to have left the club since 2014.
But this club is great to gather so many helpful how-to that look like jewels for any worried or distressed Roverist!

Default Boot Lock Repair

Help wanted! I cannot get the parts of the lock apart. The ring that holds the little casting in place will not come out. Is there a trick to this? I have bought a used replacement but need to adapt it so I can use my key. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Default Boot Lock Repair

Thanks Dorchester for trying to help. I went back to the Unclefista HowTo and noticed he had pushed a sharp screwdriver between the black plastic and the metal ring that holds everything together. There are tabs on the metal ring which is why I could not get it apart. It would have been useful to know about these. I was afraid I would snap the plastic but it was OK. All done now and working.
