They do work, we had one connected to a sliding driveway gate.Of course I forget to disconnect it more than one morning. Doubt they are available in the UK unfortunately.

Uses a .22 cartridge from an old Hilti gun.

Also prickly/thorny bushes in front of ground floor windows.
I can hear or gravel being walked or driven over but may not hear the car.
