Ben,
It could be something as simple as the solenoid on the starter, these do work intermittently in the early stages of failure. Only around £15 0n ebay and very doable yourself. Also a known problem is a bad contact on the light duty wire to the solenoid, usually a clean and refit is all that is required.

Hello mate thanks for the pointer >> not sure that both transponders would suddenly pack up... these are original keys I have tested them both for function before this happened

Mind you lightning has been known to strike twice that's for sure!

You know I think it's best I double check this, as you say it's a cheap fix and will be helpful anyway.

Thanks for the pointer and enjoy the weekend

Is there a convenient quick link showing the best way to fit a new solenoid? Found one for £25 on ebay...

Also I noticed there were after market brand new starter motors, priced at £111 and £52 >> what is the verdict on these in terms of whether they are worth getting instead of just replacing the solenoid?

Thanks in advance...

Remove the lucar connector on the starter solenoid, clean the spade terminal, a smear of vaseline then reconnect.

The 1800 starter isn't normally a problem, unlike the diesel or V6

If you suspect the immobiliser, you can after ensuring the car is in neutral, and with the ignition switch turned to position two, apply 12v direct to the spade terminal.

If the car starts ok, then time to investigate the EWS3 unit
