Double Glazing
Inherited mothers house. Got local firm to quote for 4 windows and a composite door and frame. £2200. 3 doors away couple have had exactly the same job done by, wait for it, Safestyle. Paid £6000. Never seen so much expanding foam used in my life and scaffolding up a week after the job done. They knocked on my door to ask if I'd be interested. Response was a naughty word or two Be warned.

They are often even cheaper if you fit them yourself.
Windows are easy but doors can be a fiddle. When I asked an owner of a company who made and fitted double glazed units how easy was to fit them, his answer was ''if the idiots I employ can fit them almost anybody can''. |

Always use a good local firm that comes with good local recommendations!
The double glazing rip of big firms also got into Solar Panels - ours cost £6300 whereas the rip of guys were quoting £15,000 down to £12,000 if we signed up that night! Always a sign of a rip off the pressure to sign! |

Fill in the gaps around badly fitting windows, I presume...

I live in a lovely period (1930’s) house with all original decorative fittings and door plates etc. Can’t imagine why anyone would want to have acres of plastic in place of perfect leaded Crittal windows, the character would be lost instantly and the house devalued (imo). Also, what’s the point in living in a hermetically sealed environment?
When I retired from my business (stained glass window craftsman/teacher) I had the time to make and fit my own secondary glazing. Much more efficient than cowboy-fitted mis-measures. Oh, and the whole job cost £500.
