Front spring breakage was a common failure point on the old XJ6 Jaguars (1968 to 1986). I had a look at my 75 and the lower spring pan seems so much higher than the tyre, that I am puzzled how the broken spring gets near it when it breaks ? Anybody got a photo of a failure and tyre damage ?

It's an interesting question. I suspect the damage may well happen sometime after the fracture, when the suspension is compressed. When the fractured spring is compressed, it seemingly shimmies sideways, over the cup and into the tyre. It all happens in a fraction of a second. At slow speed, people have reported punctures as they drop from a curb or exit the drive. Each time there seems to be coincidental suspension movement.

does anyone know if there has ever been a claim or law suit against the spring manufacturers? or could it not be proved that it is there fault.

They all generally break well outside the 12 month warranty.

Default Spring Failure

When my offside spring broke last weekend the lower half of the spring dropped down and the end that is normally on the cup, spun around and dug into the tyre just below the tread into the sidewall. The result was like taking a lid off of a tin can. A groove as clean as a whistle around the inner circumference of the tyre.
If that is any help to anyone!

Whilst Jules was away last week, his friends car had a blow out on their Skiing trip
Cause? A Broken Spring.
Not a Rover 75 either.

JDC comments to the point as always. They assumably walked away to tell the tale. So , the Thousand dollar question? Do we know of any one who has not walked away from a burst tyre/broken spring? Because thats all we`re are really worried about . New tyres are not to expensive nor for that matter are springs. Dying would be a bad thing however. Spread your wings my friends. The truth is out there (somewhere). If there has not been a occurance of the nasty type we can all go back to trivia again. Brer Rabbitt

Good I am really pleased. When I looked at the crash testing on 75`s they look as if you would be ok at a slow speed but one wonders about high speed? Mine has airbags all around etc so should be up to the 5 star level for crash dummies. As I`m running a extended warrenty via RAC , wonder if it would pay for repairs on a known fault? Bre Rabbit
